New Year’s Resolutions, Aerobic Exercise Machines, and Real Motivation

Was on another blog today and saw an estimate that somewhere between 10 and 60 % of people that make New Year's resolutions actually manage to keep them. From what I've seen, I'd say that sixty percent number is kinda high, but maybe I just hang around with failures
But this is the time of the year when it seems like everybody is joining a gym, buying an aerobic exercise machine or saying they're going to quit smoking. I think the reason why so many fail to keep their resolutions is because they're not really motivated to change - they just think that because it's New Years, they're supposed to do something, and they know that smoking or carrying around extra weight isn't good for them. The problem, I think, is that after a few years of half-hearted attempts, they become convinced that they have no willpower and give up. If they just waited until they were actually motivated by a desire to improve (rather than the calendar), they'd probably have a lot better chance at success.
